C4T Summary # 4
The teacher I was assigned to was Edna Sackson. She works in an International Baccalaureate PYP school in Melbourne, Australia.
First Post: My post was about teacherw putting classes together and trying to keep it a learning environment. Mrs. Edna does not agree with it.
Hi Edna, My name is Dana Johnson and I am an EDM 310 student at the University of South Alabama. I am majoring in Elementary Education, and I just wanted to let you know I really enjoyed reading your post on open the gate. I will keep this in my mind always and remember it for when I become a teacher in my own class one day. Thanks so much for sharing!
Second Post: This post was about a special connection she had with a new friend Kalpesh, who lives in Talere, Maharashtra, India.
Hi Edna! My name is Dana Johnson, and I am an EDM 310 student in Dr. Strange’s class at the University of South Alabama. I think this is a great post! I am so glad it was able to get shared with me!
Final PLN Report
I have not really added anything new to my PLN yet, but I do plan on adding the ALEX to my PLN so I can use it in the near future.I will also use it more and more as I come across and explore more educational short cuts.
Blog Post # 14 Special Metaphor Assignment
1. Why did you miss the metaphor in Tom Johnson's post, or, if you "hit the nail on the head", why do you think you understood the metaphor and why do you think that others in the class missed the metaphor?I thought the post was a little over my head, because I missed the entire subject.I really did not even know that metaphor's were being used. I felt bad not knowing technology was being used. How could I miss the concept and I am taking a class dealing with technology.
2. What metaphors have you encountered since I asked you to create a log of them? There are so many metaphors that I come into contact with on a day to day basis. Some metaphors i have heard and some I have not. For Example Over the Hill, Never bite the Hand that feed you,What goes around comes around, just to name a few.
3. What other things can we do as educators to help our students to understand and to use metaphors? As an individual I do not understand all metaphors.I use the web to find out.As a educator these are thing I will always run into.
4. Why do we use metaphors?Maybe to make jokes?People trying to expand their vocabulary. It just depend on the individual.

This post was about the state of Wisconsin having a big budget cut and will be affecting the public school system by 8 million dollars.
Hello Mr. McClung. My name is Dana Johnson and I am an EDM 310 student at the University of South Alabama. I am responding to Lesson One- Fat Cat Teachers. I am going to school to be an educator and I disagree with what Fox has to say about teachers and I think it is not fair that they are going to cut teachers. That just make things harder on the kids and teachers with the over crowed classrooms.

ALEX ( Alabama Learning Exchange)
Wow! This is my first time ever hearing about ALEX. This is a great site for educators to use. I am so amazed at all the helpful and useful learning material it has for teachers to share ideas and learn from one another. I think this was something great that has came about for the state of Alabama educators. I will surely be visiting this site again once I become an educator in the near future.

Watch this video and write about what you think.
I watched this video on youtube and I thought it was very interesting and I thought that it made a good point about technology and with the use of cell phones. Now they are making all these smart phones that I think eventually they will take over the use of computers.

Getting to know Mrs. Yollis
Mrs. Yollis seem to be a very nice well educated person. She has posted a nice post about herself and her different life experience. She has been a teacher for 24 years and is very proud. By reading her post I can tell she really loves what she do.

Video: How to comment
Mrs. Yollis shares a video on how to comment on the blog. I think that was a very helpful guide and well detailed, especially for those who do not know to comment.
Learn HTML Code
This is some very helpful tips from Mrs. Yollis on how to use HTML codes. I actually had to take some notes down for my own help. Thanks Mrs. Yollis
Time Zones of Friends
This is an interesting link of the different places. Mrs. Yollis was also creative with the different colored clocks, names, and the cities by them.
Learn about California
Mrs. Yollis added a nice video of California. I think it would be good to post a video of Alabama on my future blog link.
Learning How to shoot Digital Images
This link shows video is on how to take pictures and shoot videos. Mrs. Yollis has a great blog and I love the way she interacts with her class.

First Grade Teacher Ms. Cassidy
Watching Ms. Cassidy's class was a huge shock! I never knew children that young could be so good with using technology, but then again I take that back because my four year old daughter is very intelligent when it come to using my desk top, lap top or smart phone. I think it is great that children are learning at an early age. Ms. Cassidy's first graders know how to use blogger, skype, and wikis. Wow! I love the fact that the kids are serious about their work and experience with technology to be as young as they are. I would use blogger and skype in my classroom to interact with my students.
Dr. Strange's skype interview with Ms. Cassidy was interesting and I enjoyed watching and listening to their points of views about technology. They both have many views in common about technology and I know for sure they will keep on exploring more more over time. I love that Ms. Cassidy have a main focus with her students and to keep their education technology involved.

An Open Letter to Educators
By: Morgan Bayda
This is a great post by Morgan Bayda. I also really enjoyed the video by Dan Brown. They both make very good interesting points. I agree with many of their points, like some classes cheat you out of learning. Students pay lots of money for classes and at the end of the semester they still no nothing. Dan Brown also speaks about how students have to pay so much for books, when the information is just a simple click away. He speaks how technology needs to be in schools. As much as I think about it and say I want to quit school, that's one thing I don't agree with. I won't quit school.
Tom Johnson's Don't Let them Take Pencils Home!
Mr. Johnson's post was very unique and interesting. I do too agree that some kids use pencils as a toy and some kids use them as a learning tool. I like what he states about some kids think they are using pencils to play but are learning something at the same time and do not know it. That's so true. Now I have never heard of taking pencils home will lower test scores, and that really leave me to wonder?

What I've Learned This Year By: McClung
I really enjoyed Mr. McClung post about What he have learned his first year teaching. He made great points in his post that really had me thinking and knowing to keep in mind some of the things he stated for when i graduate and become an educator. I like how he let his quotes stand out from the post then he goes into details and talks about them. He says " Don't be afraid of Technology", that is so true. Being in EDM 310 this semester has grown on me that technology is good to use in the classrooms and to share with your students. One that stuck out to me is "Never Stop Learning". I took that as just because you are a teacher that does not mean you can stop learning new things. This is a great post and I am glad it was shared with us. I will always go back and read it from time to time.

Blog Post # 8
Richard Miller: This is How we Dream Parts 1 & 2
Part 1
Richard Miller who is an English Educator at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He talks about how technology has changed in so many ways. Today instead of looking and researching information from books everyone does it from the web. I agree with what he is speaking about everything is starting to revolve around technology, books, paper, pens, and pencils is slowly getting thrown out.
Part 2
In this part 2 of This is How we Dream, Richard Miller talks about the academic process and how technology is used in schools and classes today. What he is saying is so true. Children today is well technology ready. I have a 4 year old daughter and she knows how to work my iphone almost better than me. With all this technology children will not care to read books. They will be looking for cell phones, ipads, and laptops for everything.
EDM 310 for Dummies and The Chipper Series
The Chipper Series
This is a student that was in EDM 310 that was trying to come up with so many different reasons why she could not get her work done on time or just try to talk her way out of doing the work completely. Well, all I can say is EDM 310 was not the class for her. This is a required class and she should just jump on the wagon and get it together.
EDM 310 for Dummies
This is a good video to watch. I also agree with Jamielynn that they can write a book about this class, but it should be posted on the blog because with all the technology you have to use in this class, no one would read it by hand. I was the same way like in the beginning of this video. I thought this class was so hard and so much work. I felt helpless. Now that I am mid-way in the course my attitude has changed completely. I am learning so much in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class!
The Secret Powers of Time
This is a interesting video and I am happy it was shared with us. He speaks and draws pictures about real life events. I thought that was neat and creative. I was amazed of the many examples he used. For example, how he discuss time and how we use it everyday. He states that time is important in our life and we do not notice it. Great video!
Drive: The Surprising Truth about what Motivates Us
David Pink speaks about what motivates us in life either at home, work, or school. This is another interesting video with the picture drawing. I thought that was good to keep the viewer interested in the video. He talks and explain about better performance, and many different truth about what goes on behind the workplace.
Learn to Change, Change to Learn
This video is about different teachers, or should I say educators speaking about technology with students today. They talk about the different changes that could be made in the classroom. They discuss what is needed to be taught and what students need to be able to distinguish in life. i feel they all have good point of views about what is important for students.

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture
I really enjoyed watching this video of Randy Pausch. I am glad it was shared with us. He seemed to be a great man with a good heart. He stood up there and gave the best lecture I have seen to be as sick as he was and with as little time he had to live. He did not let that get in his way or bring him down he was still happy and in good spirit!
I liked how he had his lecture put together with his childhood dreams and the different experiences he was able to achieve and accomplish in his life. He was able to meet Capital Kirk, and becoming an imagineer, able to feel zero gravity and even wining some stuff animals . I like how he made an example of the brick wall, if you want it you will go through that bring wall. I thought that was very inspiring. This video really had me laughing and smiling because Randy Pausch seemed to have had a great sense of humor.
I think he was a great teacher and he knew how to make learning fun. I think he was a teacher that believes in his students and make his students to believe in themselves. He says that it starts from parents when coming successful. I love how he admired his parents and that they are part of him becoming the successful person his was. After parents he names teachers, and many others that can help you become successful and I agree with him that it takes become to help you out in life. He makes it very clear that to never give up! This was a great video and I know that Randy Pausch will always be remembered as a great person.

C4T Summary # 2
C4T Summary # 2
My teacher was Joe Bower, a teacher in Red, Deer, Alberta, Canada. Post # 1 was on Limits of Twentieth Century Assessments. He is a teacher that do not like or use multiple choice,true/false,matching and fill in the blank assessments. I commented My name is Dana Johnson and I am a EDM310 student at University of South Alabama and I agree with you about the assessments due to experiences myself I use to love those types of assessments until I finally got in a teachers class that did not use them. I came to realize that knowing that you do not have that type of assessment will make students study more and become more focused, well I know that is what happen in my situation so I really agree.
Post # 2 Where good ideas come from by Steven Johnson. Joe Bower posted this video on his blog. The video was about coming up with successful ideas. Steven Johnson maps it all out for you on this video. It's a interesting video, everyone should check it out on you tube.

After looking at each PLN I could do I chose to use Symbaloo. I thought it was more user friendly. I have Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Gmail, Blogger. You Tube, and ebay. I think it is a very useful internet source to use and I really enjoyed this experience to use it. I am glad it was one of our projects and I plan to add more tiles to mines over time.

Blog Post # 6
Networked Student
As of right now I consider myself being a networked student. The reason I say that is because I am learning new things about technology everyday. Now that I am in EDM 310, I am learning and using technology I have never heard of before, but I can say I am enjoying the new experience! Yes, a networked student needs a teacher to assist them with all the help they need. The teacher will help guide students through the die experiences of learning how to use technology. I plan to keep learning even after I am out of EDM 310 so that I can do the same with my class one day and help them to become a networked student.
7th Grade Student
WOW! This 7th grader did a excellent job on her PLE. I have not yet started on mines, but by watching this short video of this 7th grader makes me excited to do my very own. she has it well organized and put together. I like how she use it more for her school work other than for her social doings like facebook. she has facebook and other things she just use separate from her school doings and I thought that was a good idea. I also like how the student has some of its work open to the public where anyone can see with good helpful education material. That's awesome! I hope I will be able to create my own PLE and enjoy as use it as well as this 7th grade student enjoys it.
Smart Boards
Well, to start off I have never used a smart board before, and when reading Why Smart boards Are a Dumb Initiative By: Michael Staton and Why I hate Interactive whiteboards By: Bill Ferriter I van truly say they had me a little worried and almost a change of heart. The reason I say I almost had a change of heart is because my mom works at a school I have have heard only good things about the smart boards. she tells me how all the students K-5 interact with the smart boards along with the teachers. After reading these post I read through the comments a a lot of people agreed with the post but I found one person who did not http://interactivewhiteboardsight.blogspot.com. I now can not wait to be able to use the smart board and experience with it and see what it is all about!

My first student was Roy E. He was a student in Ms. Naughes 5th period Math class. His post was on measurement and how it is such a good help. He shared how we use measurement in the world today and how it is very much needed. I agree with Roy that measurement is one of the thing we learn in math that we will use in everyday life.
My second student was from Pt. England School in Auckland, New Zealand. I watched the podcast on the book " Ace Reporter". Those students read and entertained that book into deep interesting details. They made it so excited that you would want to read the book for yourself!
My third student was a student in Mr. Marks year 5 Pt. England school room 15. Kori - Lee wrote about a earthquake that hit. He starts his writing off with great interest, that it makes a reader want to read more about the subject. I would love to check Kori -Lee's writing out from time to time on his post.

Podcasting
Before being in EDM 310 class I was not aware of podcasting. I was also not really interested with technology being so involved in schools, but I have really changed my attitude towards that thought and has realized that it is a good source of learning for students.
The Benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom By: Joe Dale
I really enjoyed the video by Joe Dale on podcasting in the classroom and everywhere else. Podcasting is a very good use to students and how they interact with their teachers or one another. For example, where Mr. Dale showed a student was sick and unable to attend school, she was still able to download her teacher's podcast with all the class assignments on there. Podcasting is not only good for students and teachers it is also good for the parents to keep up with what their children are learning. Podcasting is great!
Eagles Nest Radio and Class Blog
I was amazed to know that this podcasting was done by third graders. I think that is so good that children are learning how to use technology so young in a good way. It is a good way for the students to learn and have a little fun all at the same time.
Langwitches
This was a podcasting idea that came about from two teachers, Mrs. Tolisano and Mrs. Khur. The podcasting idea was for students to learn Language Arts. Them coming together with this idea was good. When I become a teacher I plan to use podcasting with my students because I think it will help with my students learning as well .

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please?
When I first read this post I misunderstood Scott McLeod's way of being sarcastic about technology. After reading it a couple of times I got the message. I really enjoyed it. It was a very good point maker about the negative and positive points about technology. I have came to realize that technology is good for students in schools. Scott McLeod is the co-creator of Did You Know?
iSchool Initiative
This is a very good video by a high school senior. He did great research on schools and how many are changing with the use of technology. He makes good points on how it will save money for schools. I think that is very important.
The Lost Generation
Absolutely LOVE IT! When I first started watching and listening to this video I was like What! This video is so negative. Then it turned around and said everything backwards in a positive way I said now that's more like it. I loved this video.
Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir
Shocking is how I reacted to this video! 185 people who have never met or performed together a day in their life. Great sound, but that just goes to show you how technology works in so many ways.
Teaching in the 21st Century
This is a great video and I really enjoyed watching it. It pointed out many good facts about technology and how it's going in the 21st century. Learning and teaching technology is a great thing at a certain point to me.

A Vision of Students Today By: Michael Wesch
Watching this movie shows how college experience is today. Most of us students really do not like school and just go to waste time and money. The movie show that technology is used in schools but not all in the right way. Students go to the book store and buy those expensive books, and most times they remain in book bags, cars, or left at home on a book shelf. Everything students learn from today is from technology, for examples powerpoint. This movie provided important facts.
It's Not About the Technology By:Kelly Hines
I agree with Ms. Hines. I understand that technology is something thats becoming to good use in schools, but it should not be a main focus. Students can be taught the same way with the help of so much technology. Ms. Hines states that Teachers must be learners and thats true. teachers have to learn and stay updated to be able to teach it to their students. Next, she says Learning and Teaching are not the same. again, I agree with her. a teacher must understand what he or she is talking about to be able to teach it to someone else. I also think that a teacher should be able to teach and help students to understand and not just teach it and say they should have it. Then, Ms. Hines states Technology is useless without good teaching. Now, some teachers do not like this new modern technology and chose not to use it. I disagree with that. I think that they should consider using a little technology in the schools with students. Some are just strictly about books and chalkboards. Last, Be a 21st century teacher without the Technology. I agree 100% with this. Technology is becoming a high demand in schools and really everywhere around the world. Do not get me wrong technology is a great things being used in schools, but lets not forget about paper, pencils, and books. Technology should be strictly by course and monitored.
Is It Ok to Be a Technologically Illiterate Teacher? By; Karl Fisch
Mr. Fisch has very important statements on this post, I see why its a winning post. They were interesting facts and I have learn something I did not know from this post. He is very opened minded about education. I myself think that teachers should have some qualities with technology. They should stay updated with the world.
Gary Hayes Social Media Count
When I fist saw this I was like WOW! What is going on? Numbers were moving and adding up so fast. Technology has grown so much in todays world and is still expanding. It's amazing to look at how fast the numbers were changing on all the different social networks and technology devices. I just could not believe what i was seeing. Really, are these numbers true!

Aaron Elyer
During my reading Aaron posts, I looked at him as being a good educator. He speaks about true and realistic information about education. Failure not being an option , one of his topics , which i do agree with. C4T1 Failure comes from educators who do not help or let students with another chance. C4T2 Then, he talks about technology becoming more popular in school. I agree on that as well, technology is not a problem but lets not forget about the paper, pencil, and books. Previously the school list has been put to little use or not used at all.

Blog Post # 2
Well, I can really say I did not know! WOW! Watching this movie has really showed me how much technology has changed so much over the years. A lot of things that was being view in this movie, I had no clue about. I am glad I got the chance to see many different things and different ways technology is shared around the world. Technology is very popular today. People are depending on technology today more ever. For example, computers, cell phones, ipads,etc... which I think is great. Years from now technology will be even better than it is now!
Poor Mr. Winkle wakes up from a long, long, time of being sleep. He walked out into a new world compared to what it use to be many years ago. He was shocked with all the computers and other different technology that has came about today. By watching this movie I took in that technology is much more popular. Mr. Winkle was not use to it.
He traveled different places and saw that everything had changed. He then went to a school, which was still like he remember. There he saw pencil, paper, and students listening to the teacher. He spotted a dusty laptop which did not bother him because it was off. That goes to show that all schools show get more into the technology today and interact with the students.
Sir Ken Robinson who is a very good speaker. I really enjoyed listening to his speech on creativity. He spoke on how important creativity is and how it need to be used more in schools. Sir Ken Robinson thinks that every school should have the ability to be creative not just certain schools. He made several jokes during his speech, which were quite funny but also true at the same time. He said "everyone is creative" and I have to agree with him. Everyone has some special gift in them that they can use and be creative. Once I graduate and become a educator I plan to use creativity in my classroom with my students because it is important also.
Cecelia Gualt, a very smart educated young lady. She was well prepared and asked Sir Ken Robinson interesting questions. She was taught by a good educator, because she was well spoken during the interview. He questions were asked on her behalf but, also they were questions others wanted to know and got the chance to get the answers through her interview. For this movie being as short as it was a lot was discussed and answered.
I really enjoyed this movie with Mrs. Vicki Davis! L liked the way she let her class help her teach the class about technology and all different ways it could be used. She shows much creativity in class with her students with all the programs they can use a create on the computer. Her class also taught her how to use one ofn the programs that she did not know how to use and they did. I thought that was very impressive! Mrs. Davis classroom was well set up and has a nice learning environment.

My teacher was Mathew Needleman. My first post was with two videos that teachers made about getting pink slips. I did not take this as joking post it was stated with true facts about teachers and receiving pink slips. Here is what I commented
Hello, My name is Dana Johnson. I am an EDM 310 student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange’s class. I am an Elementary Education major and I think it was great for you to share the videos about pink slips. After graduating my biggest fear is not being able to get a job and or if I get a job fearing at the end of every school year about being served a pink slip. I think that is just crazy because we need teachers. If they lay off teachers that means more kids in a class with one teacher, which makes its harder to teach and harder for the kids to be taught.
My second post was on Mythbuster: Education Edition, and Learning Styles Don't Exist. He was speaking about students that were visual learner and students who are orally learners. Here is what I commented:
